| Daniel Radcliffe Joins A Chorus Line | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe gets a special kiss on the cheek from singer/dancer Heather Parcells after the closing night performance of A Chorus Line at The Schoenfeld Theater on Sunday in New York City. The 19-year-old actor has been preparing for the upcoming reprisal of his role as Alan Strang in the play, Equus. The show opens on Broadway September 25, with advance screenings starting September 5. For more information on the production, visit the official website at EquusOnBroadway.com. It’s also been recently reported that Radcliffe admitted to UK’s Daily Mail that he suffers from dyspraxia, a neurological disorder that impairs coordination “Yes, Dan Radcliffe does have dyspraxia,” his rep said. “This is something he has never hidden. Thankfully his condition is very mild and at worst manifests itself in an inability to tie his shoelaces and bad handwriting.” |
| Shia LaBeouf is Shirtless and Smiling | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Shia LaBeouf and a new gal pal spend the day at a beach in Malibu, Calif., on Sunday afternoon. When the 22-year-old actor spotted paparazzi, he started walking backwards to avoid being photographed with his new lady. Shia has been back on the Los Angeles set of Transformers 2 since last week even though he had extensive surgery on his left hand last month. This is all following his late-night car crash. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (movie poster below) is still aiming for a June 26, 2009 release. It’s going to be mighty interesting to see how the film works in Shia’s hand injury |
| Kristen Dunst is Poster Pretty | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Check out the new movie poster for How To Lose Friends & Alienate People starring Kirsten Dunst, Megan Fox, Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges. The poster, via MTV Movies Blog, boldly proclaims it’s “the most hilarious comedy of the year.” We’ll see about that! The film will follow a similar storyline to the novel of the same name about a British writer (Pegg as Sidney Young) struggles to fit in at a high-profile magazine in New York. For more information on the movie, visit the official movie website at How2LoseFriends.com. Other pictures include Kirsten, 26, and a friend looking for their car in the Soho neighborhood of New York City on Tuesday morning. |
| Fanboy Bites: 'Dark Knight' Script, 'Poltergeist' Remake and 'The Hobbit' | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Today will be partly cloudy with a chance of kick ass! The Hobbit: Not long ago Guillermo Del Toro told fans that his next move was to begin work on The Hobbit script very soon. Well guess what? To our complete shock and surprise, the dude actually followed through on all this "writing script nonsense" and -- wait for it -- started working on the script. YES! And this is, like, the BIGGEST news online today. "NEWSFLASH: Del Toro is on page 12 and he's already introduced 750 new creatures!" I give up ... call me in 12 years when the film is finally complete and ready to hit theaters. The Dark Knight: You've watched the movie countless times, followed hundreds of viral sites, read thousands of stories on Heath Ledger and why he deserves to square off against Jesus up in heaven for a chance to be God's new (and much more well-liked) son -- so, what's left? Well, if you still haven't overdosed on The Dark Knight and/or are in desperate need of another Batman fix, feel free to feast your eyes on the film's script. Yes, JoBlo managed to snag a copy of the entire thing (read it here) for you to save, print out and do whatever it is you freaks do with stuff like that. Personally, I enjoyed reading it to see where they trimmed and cut and called Wonder Woman a whore. Kidding! Just wanna make sure you're paying attention. Poltergeist remake: Because in this one she's watching a reality show, gets pulled into the television and subsequently bores herself to death. [Writes down notes for Poltergeist 2 pitch ...] Anyway, THR tells us that Boogeyman writers Juliet Snowden and Stiles "I wonder how many Teen Wolf jokes he got growing up" White will pen the script for the remake of this classic spooky flick. "Too soon!" yelled a nobody movie blogger, but alas it was too late. |
| "Perkins' 14" Coming to Theaters in Early 2009 | Aug 19, 2008 | captainunderoos | Other | PERKINS' 14, currently in post production in NYC, is the first feature film to be developed entirely over the Internet. What a year ago may have been a YouTube sensation might now be a box office success. Produced by After Dark Films and Massify in association with FanLib, PERKINS' 14 will be distributed in theaters nationwide (January 2009) as part of the third After Dark Horrorfest. Singer's film "Dark Ride" was one of the more successful features released theatrically during year one of Horrorfest. Directed by award winning filmmaker Craig Singer (Dark Ride, Dead Dogs Lie, A Good Night to Die), with a screenplay by Lane Shadgett (Luna Park, All Lost Souls), PERKINS' 14 was developed online at Massify.com. Writers were invited to upload story pitches, and actors submitted audition videos. The site's community members then voted on their favorite story and on which actors they thought deserved to be cast in the four main roles. |
| 'Mamma Mia!' to Become Louder, More Annoying Via 'Sing-Along Edition' | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | If you're one of the many moviegoers who loved Mamma Mia!, perhaps you thought the only thing missing from the experience was the shrill sound of your fellow audience members screaming the lyrics of "Dancing Queen" along with Meryl Streep and her lady friends. Well, Universal Pictures has read your mind, and Mamma Mia!: The Sing-Along Edition will open on Aug. 29 in select theaters. It'll be the same movie, only with all the musical numbers subtitled and audience members encouraged to join in on the vocals. All we have so far is a press release from Universal, which doesn't say how many theaters the sing-along edition will be in. You are encouraged to visit the Mamma Mia! website for updates, however. These will be regular screenings at regular movie theaters for the regular prices; all that's different is that the lyrics will be on the screen, karaoke-style. And the best part is, even if you're a terrible singer, you can take comfort in knowing you're still better than Pierce Brosnan. ABBA's music is famous for being catchy, and as a result many people overlook the actual words. This sing-along event will be an opportunity to really notice and pay attention to the subtle complexities of lines like this, from "Money, Money, Money": In my dreams I have a plan If I got me a wealthy man I wouldn't have to work at all I'd fool around and have a ball Hooray for girl power and rhyming! |
| Will 'The Greatest American Hero' Stars Return? | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | While he isn't really a "super" hero (at least not in the innate superpower sense), William Katt -aka- Ralph Hinkley -aka- The Greatest American Hero has always been my top dog. So, I've been pretty apprehensive about a big-screen reboot of the wacky '80s series -- my nights plagued with nightmares of Zac Efron, topped with a really bad perm, flying into walls. But at the very least, the new feature might get some old-school cameos. According to MTV, Connie Sellecca says that the famous trio -- her, Katt, and the splendid Robert Culp, have all received offers for cameos in the remake. Whether they take Stephen J. Cannell up on the offer remains to be seen. But at least that's something. In the meantime, there's also a comic book and animated webisodes on the way, so Katt-style Ralph is far from finished. And as an added bonus to you lucky goons in the states, the MTV link above contains a clip of Culp taking issue with Ralph being called a superhero. |
| Lots of "Child's Play" Remake Details | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Several months ago, during the press junket for "Martian Child," producer David Kirschner revealed that a remake of the 1998 "Child's Play" was in the works. Now, AICN caught up with Kirschner and creator Don Mancini to discuss the 20th Anniversary DVD release of the original movie and to dig up some details about the remake. Mancini has previously directed "Seed of Chucky" and has written all five "Chucky" films. He will step behind the camera again to helm the remake, in addition to writing it. According to Kirschner, there are no plans to replace Brad Dourif as the voice of the main character. "No, no, it's going to be Brad," he said, with Mancini adding: "Who would you get that's better? David and I talk about this a lot, that because he's a puppet, there's an aspect of him that feels like he's an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like. It's almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something. If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think." While the story is being kept a secret, Mancici revealed that the new film will use mostly puppetry, be an origin story, and will be more scary than funny. "I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy," he said. Kirschner added: "I think Don has really created some really clever twists and expectations that a fan of the first 'Child's Play' film, you will be surprised and shocked by, but it will follow I think very closely a lot of the first film against twists and turns that Don has put into it that an audience thinks it is going to go one way and we will go another even though the story is pretty similar." At this point, everyone is working out deals with Universal. As much as they would love to have the film ready by next year, Kirschner believes it will be more like the Fall of 2010. |
| "Diary of the Dead 2" Begins Filming Next Month | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Bloody-Disgusting has confirmed that director George A Romero will begin filming the sequel to "Diary of the Dead" on September 15th in Toronto, Canada. Casting has yet to be revealed. Plot: Our heroes, trapped in the mansion where we left them, battle waves of ravenous zombies, barely escaping alive. In search of a safe place to settle, they commandeer an abandoned ferry and sail to a deserted island, only to find that it is already populated by a civilization of the dead. Told in the same first-person style that distinguished "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," the next episode of the saga is a violent siege set in the middle of nowhere, a desperate struggle for survival, and peace, between two tribes: the living and the living dead. The first film, which was released in February of 2008 in only 42 theaters, went on to earn $4.5 million, with over $3.5 million coming from foreign markets. |
| The Hobbit Is Being Written | Aug 19, 2008 | SexiVixxEN | Other | Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, and Fran Walsh have begun writing The Hobbit. The news comes from TheOneRing.net, where they had their elven minions at a telephone Q&A Guillermo recently did in Australia. During the call, del Toro confirmed that scripting has started, and even described the writing process as “beautiful”. It sounds like Peter Jackson has some sort of creativity orgy going over there in New Zealand. It’s a small step, but it’s the first step in finally getting The Hobbit turned into a movie and letting loose whatever freaky, eyeless vision del Toro has flapping around in his head. |
| International "RocknRolla" TV Spot | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | brand new TV spot for the upcoming "RocknRolla" has been released, featuring some quick shots of the characters and some smart dialogue that Guy Ritchie (Snatch) is known for. [via Empire] In "RockNRolla," London's criminal underworld takes notice of a Russian mobster's shady land deal, a scam that puts millions of dollars up for grabs. Gerard Butler stars as One Two, a street-smart mobster who has learned to play both sides of the fence. Tom Wilkinson is the lethal head mobster, Lenny Cole, part of London's old mob regime, which is quickly losing ground to the wealthier foreign mob. Thandie Newton acts as One Two's love interest, Stella, an accountant with ties to the underworld, and Idris Elba acts as Mumbles, One Two's partner. The movie is having trouble in the US, because Warner Bros is not too excited about the prospects of it. WB president Alan Horn recently called it "too English" and believes that it will fail in America. As a result, there is a good chance that Horn will not commit any money for marketing. So, while an October 31st release date still stands, there is a chance that this is the last time you will be hearing about "RocknRolla." |
| Jon Voight Roseanne Rant Response | Aug 19, 2008 | SexiVixxEN | Other | Angelina Jolie’s politics earned her a humiliating tongue-lashing from comedy queen Roseanne Barr, and at least one person isn’t very happy about it. | Fans flock to Bernie Mac's memorial | Aug 19, 2008 | jessalynlissa | Other | Monday, August 18, 2008 Thousands of fans congregated at public memorial for actor and comic Bernie Mac was held this Saturday in Chicago. | Veronica Mars Movie Still Being Discussed | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | When Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas met with Kristen Bell last week, they talked about the possibility of doing a Veronica Mars movie. It’s not a go, but Thomas told EW that he’s had “a few conversations” with Mars executive producer Joel Silver. Thomas says that he’s too busy right now, “But as soon as I have any free time, that’s my top priority.” I loved the show as much as the next guy, and while I have a desire to see the cast reunite for another tale, it makes me wonder if it is really worth it. Wasn’t the appeal of Veronica Mars that she was solving cases in High School (later in College) sometimes behind her father’s back? With Bell now “all grown up”, what would the story and setting evolve into? Before the show was canceled, there was talk of setting a new season set in the FBI academy. That’s fine for a television show, but they’ll need a bigger and better plan for a feature film. And the other question is: Could the feature film be viable on the big screen or could it only be profitable as a direct-to-DVD effort? |

| Religulous is Now Playing in Two Movie Theaters | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Larry Charles‘ Religulous is scheduled to hit theaters in October. But did you know that the Bill Maher documentary is already playing in a couple theaters right now? In order to meet the Academy’s rule #12 which states that a “a documentary feature must complete both a seven-day commercial run in a theater in Los Angeles County, and a seven-day commercial run in a theater in the borough of Manhattan between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008″ to be considered for the Best Documentary Oscar. So right now the film is playing twice daily at Laemmle’s Claremont 5 in Claremont, CA and the Creative Entertainment Coliseum Quad on 181st Street in New York City. So if you’re near either city, you might want to buy a ticket. I’m sure it will only be a matter of days before some LA and New York journalists buy a ticket and file a review online. I will be seeing the film in a couple weeks at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. |

| Gervais and Merchant are THE MEN AT THE PRU | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the creative team behind TV hits The Office and Extras, have finished writing the script for a new ‘dramedy’ feature film titled The Men at the Pru. According to the Independent the movie will be a quirky, coming-of-age story set in 1970s Reading and will focus on two clerks who work at a branch of the Prudential building society. Gervais, who has his first Hollywood leading role in the soon-to-be-released Ghost Town, was born and raised in the Reading suburbs and so will be drawing on his own knowledge as well as extensive research into the financial world of yesteryear that he and Merchant have apparently undertaken. The Men at the Pru was initially conceived as a TV series but has now been plotted as a feature film due to start filming next May or June according to Gervais’s estimates. Described as “a cross between Mad Men and The Office”, it definitely sounds like Gervais and Merchant’s first TV success, albeit transported back to the seventies and the soulless world of finance - an ideally bland target for the creative team’s brand of quotidian satire. Gervais who has now firmly moved into movies, will also unleash his co-writing/directing debut This Side of the Truth next year. |
| Honey of a First Trailer for 'Secret Life of Bees' | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | At the end of July, we shared the poster premiere of The Secret Life of Bees. Now you can check out the trailer for the film above, courtesy of Trailer Addict. This is the Dakota Fanning-starring film about a young girl haunted by the memory of her late mother. With her caregiver Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson), she runs off to a South Carolina town and is taken in by the Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo), who teach her the comforts of beekeeping and honey. Unfortunately, the girl's troubled past, in the form of father Paul Bettany, finds her. While the poster was a little sappy (or perhaps "honey" is the best word in this case) for my tastes, the trailer has a nice amount of sass mixed into the drama, as well as a great one-breath sentence uttered by Fanning. I think I just might have to see this film, which will hit screens on October 17. What about you? |
| Demi Moore's Daughter Rumer Stars in Mom's Directorial Debut | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Prior to our interview with Anna Faris earlier today, Cinematical managed to spend some time with three of her co-stars in The House Bunny, namely Rumer Willis, Emma Stone and Katharine McPhee (who's recording an album now for a Spring '09 release, in case you happen to be a die hard McPhee nerd). And, yes, it's true what they say about sitting next to an American Idol finalist -- those butterflies in your stomach are real and they desperately want (and need) to hear a Whitney Houston cover for some odd reason. In speaking with Rumer Willis about her upcoming projects, she mentioned that her mother, Demi Moore, had just finished work on her directorial debut -- a short film for Glamour Reel Moments called Streak. While Willis was tight-lipped on the film's plot, she did say it starred herself, Brittany Snow and Sarah Wright (who also has a role in The House Bunny). Other women who've directed shorts for GRM include Jennifer Aniston, Bryce Dallas Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow. You can find out more about the program over on its official website, and one imagines we'll catch Streak a little later this year. |
| Mr. T and Bill Hader Join 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Earlier today Cinematical managed to grab the adorable and hysterical Anna Faris for a nice, quiet comfy-couch chat about what it's like appearing on the cover of Playboy Magazine, her new movie The House Bunny and a ton of other randomness (look for our interview later this week). While speaking with Anna about her upcoming projects, she did tell us a little bit more about the voice work she's doing for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, based on the popular book by Judi and Rob Barrett. The film follows "a scientist who tries to solve world hunger only to see things go awry as food falls from the sky in abundance." For Faris this is her first animated movie, and she'll be playing a weather girl who's kind of a tweaked version of her (they've filmed her movements and all that jazz). While speaking to her about it, Faris also revealed that aside from co-star Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Mr. T will have roles in the flick. No word on who or what they'll be playing, though this marks Mr. T's first feature role since Not Another Teen Movie back in 2001. Ahem, I smell comeback ... Faris said she's still doing a little work on the film, though most of her stuff is done. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is due in theaters on January 15, 2010. Stay tuned for our interview with my favorite bunny later this week ... |
| Is 'An American Carol' a Parody or a Right-Wing Diatribe? | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | You may have heard that spoof veteran David Zucker's newest project, An American Carol, is a takedown of Michael Moore. You can now have a look at the trailer, online at Yahoo!. And then you can riddle me this: Does An American Carol look like a clever parody of Moore's documentaries, or just a partisan attack on the filmmaker? Or, put another way, is the clip of Bill O'Reilly slapping around Kevin Farley's "Michael Malone" a commentary on the rivalry between the two, or right-wing wish fulfillment? One thing to note before answering is that O'Reilly appears in the film himself, while Moore does not. Moore is obviously fair game; I've enjoyed his films, and sympathize with (some of) his politics, but I'd eagerly watch a skillful spoof of the pudgy, faux-working-class provocateur. I think parts of the trailer are pretty funny ("Here I am on the island paradise Cuba!"). But if the point is just to pile on the guy, with a rah-rah patriotic, stop-hating-America message at the end, then I'm significantly less interested. The thing is, the trailer really doesn't make clear what's going on. On one hand, prominent conservatives like O'Reilly and James Woods appear to deliver literal and figurative blows. On the other, "Michael Malone" gets accused of being a slaveowner, which sounds more like a parody of conservative attacks on Moore than of Moore himself. And is Trace Adkins poking fun at his image here, or is he for real? We know that Zucker is himself conservative, and that the movie is political -- which is fine. But is it political in an incisive, worthwhile way, or in the brainless beatdown mode of Ann Coulter et al? What do you think? |

| Daniel Radcliffe Worries That no One Likes Him | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Daniel Radcliffe says he often worries that no one likes him. The Harry Potter star -- who is set to make his Broadway debut in the play Equus later this year -- admits he struggles to deal with the expectations of his co-stars. He tells American Vogue, "They're always expecting some terrible person to turn up. "So you try to make sure they know that you’re intelligent and not horrible. Then you try to be rugged and sexy – but only after smart and lovable." He added, "I'd love to have that blind confidence, that total oblivion to how the world sees you." The 19-year-old -- who earned a whopping $25m last year -- also revealed that his mother allowed him to pursue acting when he fell behind academically. "I was having a hard time at school, in terms of being crap at everything, with no discernible talent," he said, adding that he enjoys writing poetry – sometimes more than acting. "Poetry’s this wonderful, sort of secret thing you’ve got going that you don’t tell anybody about," he said. "Acting has confines. Poetry has none." |
| Dean Cain is a 'Maneater' | Aug 19, 2008 | SexiVixxEN | Other | It would be great to see the old Superman, Dean Cain, tamed by the purr of a Jaguar, but Maneater is a little less Hall & Oates and a little more blood and guts. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Dean Cain, Conrad Janis (The Cable Guy), Stephen Lunsford (Bratz), Walter Phelan (House of 1000 Corpses), Maximillian Roeg (7th Heaven), and Lacy Phillips (Pushing Twilight) have signed up to take on the Native American legend, Wendigo. As Elisabeth told us last month, director Michael Emanuel's version of Wendigo will center on a small-town sheriff who used to be an FBI profiler. When a bunch of strange murders pop up, he puts his old talents to the test, "only to discover that the monster he's profiling might be himself." See, the Wendigo spirit is said to enter through acts of cannibalism or dreams, so we'll have to wait and see if someone slips him a piece human meat, or he gets pulled into a bad dreamworld. There's no word on who is playing what role, but IMDb does have the character names listed. Seeing that Cain's at the top, I think it's safe to assume that he's our Wendigo dude. |
| McG Makes 'Terminator Salvation' Cast Read Cormac McCarthy | Aug 19, 2008 | SexiVixxEN | Other | Ever since McG was announced as director of Terminator Salvation, he's taken on this rather endearing, apologetic, puppy-dog attitude, assuring fans that he takes the franchise seriously, and even apologizing for the absurdity of his trade name. It would have worked much better on me had I not sat through We Are Marshall, but it does make me want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, especially given how badly I want this sequel to be good. The filmmaker's newest gambit: showing us just how seriously he takes the Terminator franchise. Just how seriously? So seriously, he says, that he distributed copies of Cormac McCarthy's arty, ultra-depressing The Road to his cast, hoping that the novel would help the actors understand the "existential detachment" that comes with living in a post-apocalyptic environment. MTV has a bit more from the director. I wrote a column on The Road a while back; it's a powerful, upsetting novel, pretty un-Terminator-like in its depiction of an empty, decidedly cyborg-free post-apocalypse. It's hard to take seriously the notion that an entry in the Terminator franchise -- a PG-13 entry at that -- could really draw much inspiration from that book (which is, of course, getting its own bona-fide adaptation later this year), but again: it's endearing, and a bit heartening, to see McG trying so hard. |
| Check Out the 'RocknRolla' UK TV Spot | Aug 19, 2008 | SexiVixxEN | Other | Empire Online has an exclusive new tv spot for RocknRolla -- you would swear you were watching the beginning of Snatch with this bit, but even if it is the typical Guy Ritchie, I'm ok with that. There are movies that I demand innovation in, and then there are comfort films where I know I'm going to have a good time. RocknRolla looks like it may fit that. And frankly, it looks a bit sexier than any of Guy Ritchie's previous outings. I love the little moment between Thandie Newton and Gerard Butler at the end of this one. (Is it that easy to get into Butler's place?) But remember, readers, this movie is very English and therefore you probably won't understand any of it. I know I don't -- what with their teatime biscuits, bangers and mash, toad-in-a-hole, and warm beer. It's just such an alien culture. We know there's no gangsters there, just jolly chimney sweeps and flying nannies. And we all know Scotsmen only wear kilts and blue paint -- I don't know what this Butler's playing at. RocknRolla (may) open in a theatre near you on October 31st. I've also embedded the American trailer below, seeing as it hit the wires while I was scribbling notes at the panel. Not that you'll understand such a European thing, anyway. |
| Vin Diesel to Direct Fast and the Furious Prequel | Aug 19, 2008 | SexiVixxEN | Other | Vin Diesel revealed to ComingSoon that he is directing a 20-minute prequel to the fourth Fast and the Furious movie. Diesel will also star in the prequel alongside Michelle Rodriguez and Sung Kang. No word on how this will connect, if at all, with the earlier films or where it will be released. Maybe it will be included on a DVD re-release of “the original trilogy”. Chances are it can’t be worse than 2 Fast 2 Furious. This isn’t Diesel’s first time in the director’s chair. He helmed and starred in a short film titled Strays, that was shown during the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. Steven Spielberg saw the short and decided to cast the actor in Saving Private Ryan, jump-starting his career. He tried his hand at directing one more time in a low-budget 1999 short film titled Multi-Facial. Diesel has since tried his hand at producing, at at one point was announced to helm and star in Hannibal the Conqueror, about the Carthaginian general who led an elephant-riding battalion across the Alps to attack Rome in the 3rd Century B.C. Justin Lin’s Fast and Furious hits theaters on June 5th 2009. |
| Tom Cruise "Considered Giving up Acting" | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Tom Cruise's falling popularity in Hollywood is knocking the star's confidence so much that he considered giving up acting for good, according to reports. "He can no longer command top fees for his movies as his name isn't a guarantee of box-office success anymore and that's hit his confidence hard," a source said. "So much so that he even considered giving up acting at one point." Cruise's career crisis is also said to be causing tensions in his marriage to Katie Holmes, with the former Dawson's Creek actress struggling to take the lead in the relationship. Holmes also fueled speculation that cracks were starting to appear in the marriage after she failed to attend the Scientology Celebrity Centre's 39th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles on August 9. However, two days later, Katie, 29, flew from New York to be at the Top Gun star's side in LA for the premiere of his latest movie Tropic Thunder, in which he only has a bit part. A source tells Britain's Now magazine, "Tom was clinging to Katie, which is no surprise – she's been his rock these past few months. "At the premiere, they seemed mismatched. Katie looked every inch the glamorous starlet, while Tom looked needy, diminished and much older. "It remains to be seen whether their marriage can weather this storm." |
| Glover Slams 'Racist' Hollywood | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Actor DANNY GLOVER has branded Hollywood studio bosses racist after failing to secure financial backers for a biopic of revolutionary Haitian leader TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE. According to the New York Post, Glover's project has yet to move forward due to financial woes - despite Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offering half of the $36 million (GBP18 million) budget to finance the film. Glover was reportedly banking on the other $18 million (GBP9 million) from a distributor, but claims he faced rejection from financiers unsure of producing a film based on L'Ouverture, who helped to abolish slavery in Haiti in the late 1700s. Glover recently told a Paris film seminar: "Producers said, 'It's a nice project, a great project'... Where are the white heroes?'" The Pan-African Newswire reports that Glover added: "I couldn't get the money here. I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody... The first question you get is, 'Is it a black film?' All of them agree, 'It's not going to do good in Europe, it's not going to do good in Japan.' Somebody has to prove that to be a lie." |
| Chris Kattan, Wife Split After Eight Weeks | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | SNL alum Chris Kattan, 37, and his wife, model Sunshine Tutt, 31, are having troubles with their marriage less than two months after tying the knot. “They’re separated for the moment but are working on it,” a rep for Chris confirms to Life & Style. “They’ve got issues that they’re trying to work out,” adds an insider. “It’s not a divorce right now, but they’re taking time apart.” The couple married on June 28 at the Chateau du Sureau in California. But the million-dollar question is: Did Chris make Sunshine sign a prenup? |
| Bruce Campbell talks 'Evil Dead 4' | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Evil Dead actor Bruce Campbell has vowed that there will be no young sidekick in the fourth movie in the franchise. The 50-year-old, who played Ash in director Sam Raimi's horror trilogy, told MTV News that he will be the star if a sequel goes ahead. He said: "I think the audience would be insulted if you [brought in a sidekick] because then you feel this obvious pressure to appeal. The beauty of the Evil Dead movies is that you’re only appealing to one demographic and that’s people who like horror movies. And you just have to please them. "You don’t have to appeal to the studio. You’re already pleasing them by giving them part 4." However, he noted that any speculation about Evil Dead 4 is "smoke and mirrors at this point", saying: "Nobody knows anything. I mean if we were really smart [though], we’d go back to a handheld movie and shoot it in 16mm and find someplace in the middle of nowhere. And have a crew of ten people. If we were smart." Commenting on Raimi's recent claim that he would "love" to make another film in the franchise, Campbell added: "When he’s ready, I’m ready." The first movie in the trilogy was released in 1981. |
| Christina Applegate "clear" of cancer | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Christina Applegate has revealed that she is "100% clear and clean" from cancer. The American actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this month, spoke about her battle with the disease on Good Morning America earlier today. Applegate said she underwent a double mastectomy, even though she only detected cancer in one breast, because she did not want to endure regular checkups with her doctor. "I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything," she said. "I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one." Speaking about how she has coped with the illness, the 36-year-old said: "Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I scream and I get really angry and I get really into wallowing in self-pity sometimes, and I think it’s all part of healing." She joked of her reconstructive surgery: "I'm gonna have cute boobs till I'm 90." Applegate, who found fame as Kelly Bundy in Married With Children, is expected to begin filming the new series of ABC's Samantha Who? next month. |
| New DVD Picks of the Week: 'Please Vote for Me' and 'Wizard of Gore' | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | It's a slow week, packed mainly with television box sets, but there are a few little-known films you might want to check out. Please Vote for Me This was a film that I was dying to see at TIFF last year, but scheduling conflicts kept me from it. Luckily, the highly praised Please Vote for Me is now hitting DVD shelves. Imagine a group of third-grade students putting Tracy Flick to shame as they hold a democratic election for school monitor. In my day (man, that phrase makes me feel old...), school elections boiled down to some crappy posters and speeches, all resulting in a popularity contest. These Chinese students, however, have taken a cue from the political bigwigs. We're talking political consultants, polling, and exploitation -- basically a real election full of tiny tots. Unfortunately, the only extra on this release is a theatrical trailer, but considering the reviews and how purely awesome this film sounds, I bet it's still worth it. |
| The Geek Beat: What We Learned in Summer 2008 | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | The arrival of snow in the mountains in my neck of the woods means that summer really is on the way out. It seems like it was only yesterday that we were discussing what would be the hits and misses of the season. Now the talk is going to turn to Oscar buzz and Halloween horror. Are you freaked by how quickly time has flown by yet? Anyway, seeing as school is already in session, I've decided to pay homage to my Geek Beat predecessor, Mark Beall, and do a list of things we learned during the summer season. For no good numerical reason, I stopped at 15. From there, it's your turn to share what important lessons you will carry from your time in the multiplex. (And a special thanks goes out to Jarrette and Matt, who bantered back and forth with me in this study session.) 1. You can use a snake as a rope and its fragile skeletal system won't pull apart. They won't even bite you if it does! (Indiana Jones) 2. All it really takes to be Batman? A really strong jaw, and nice lips. 3. When faced with Tony Stark, all your hard-hitting journalism training goes out the window. (Iron Man) 4. You can get a custom Joker suit made and no one will ever connect you or its purchase to the psychopath terrorizing Gotham. (The Dark Knight) 5. Fridges preserve not only food, but life. In the event of a nuclear blast or poisonous air, they will save humans and plants alike. Who knew? Not I. My watercress goes bad after a week. (Wall-E and Indiana Jones) |
| Check Out This 'Monsters vs. Aliens' Trailer, While You Can | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | It may be bootlegged -- and therefore a limited-time offering -- but from very early on, this trailer for next spring's 3-D animated bonanza Monsters vs. Aliens had me sold and only worked its way up from there. I like that all of the human characters appear to be related to the Parr family, and that the monsters and aliens on display promise to look even cooler in three dimensions. I dig Stephen Colbert as the President and Keifer Sutherland as General W.R. Monger, not to mention other voices by Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Rainn Wilson, Hugh Laurie, and Paul Rudd. (Oh, and Reese Witherspoon never did anyone any harm either.) Most importantly, the project gives off a saavy sense of humor without relying as heavily on pop culture riffs as Dreamworks used to. A '50-styled sci-fi send-up should hold my attention as much as the little ones, if done right. Between this, Kung Fu Panda, and Over the Hedge, I think that it's fair to say that Dreamworks Animation has found a reliable niche as Pixar's hipper cousin. With any luck, I won't be proven wrong come March 27, 2009. |
| Debunking the Myths Surrounding the Harry Potter Date Change | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | When Warner Bros. announced last Thursday that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had been pushed back from Nov. 21 to next July, hardcore fans immediately entered the five stages of nerd grief. So far we've worked our way through denial, anger, semi-literate Internet ranting, and conspiracy-theorizing. All that's left is acceptance, where we go ahead and watch the movie when it comes out next summer and forget any of this ever happened. In the meantime, several myths about the date change have popped up, and we'd like to help separate fact from fiction. MYTH #1: Half-Blood Prince was moved because WB was scared of Twilight. According to some people who are fans of the Twilight novel and pre-fans of the Twilight movie, WB got nervous about Harry Potter coming out just three weeks before the teen-vampire chick flick, fearing it would siphon off too much of Harry's audience. Most observers believe Twilight will indeed be a hit, but come on. The Harry Potter franchise the most lucrative in film history, with a total worldwide box-office gross so far of $4.5 billion. There's no reason for WB to fear any competition, no matter how formidable. Also, most of Harry Potter's income is from overseas, where Twilight, still largely a U.S. phenomenon, cannot hope to compete. Plus, if Half-Blood Prince came out Nov. 21 and followed the usual pattern, it would have already made most of its projected income by the time Twilight showed up on Dec. 12 anyway. Three weeks is a huge gap in our modern, front-loaded, it's-all-about-opening-weekend movie culture. If there had only been one week between them, then maybe you'd have something. |
| Assessing the Themes of Tropic Thunder | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | [THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SIGNIFICANT SPOILERS FOR TROPIC THUNDER. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED] One of my favorite films this summer is Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder. While it didn’t do as well at the box office as I might’ve hoped, I think the film is hilarious and pitch-perfect in the way it ridicules Hollywood excess. Furthermore, this movie is the Hot Fuzz of Hollywood war films; where the former was a parody of the best action films ever made, Tropic Thunder takes elements of war films and turns them on their head, from the grizzled veteran, to the skinny and green straight man, all the way to the brutal and revered enemy leader (in this case potrayed by the simultaneously adorable and terrifying Brandon Soo Hoo) But underneath its sheen of light-hearted hilarity lies a biting message not just about the lengths to which actors will go for an Oscar, but about the ridiculousness of white cultural appropriation. |
| Portia de Rossi Ellen Wedding Pictures People Magazine | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Emmy-winning talk show Ellen DeGeneres and new wife Portia de Rossi are opening up to People Magazine about tying the knot in Los Angeles on Saturday“What can I say? I’m the luckiest girl in the world,” Ellen says. “She’s officially off the market. No one else gets her. And now she’ll cook and clean for me.” Portia says it’s a day they’ll never forget. “The love we felt from the people surrounding us, and the love we have for each other, made this the most beautiful and emotional day.” |
| Guillermo del Toro was Offered "Watchmen" | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | In an interview with IGN, director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) has revealed that at one point he was offered the job of helming "Watchmen," which he turned down. As everyone knows, the studio went with Zack Snyder (300) instead. "You know, at one point or another, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin asked me if I wanted to do The Watchmen and I just couldn't get my head around 'The Watchmen' being two or three hours long," said del Toro. "I always thought that the series depended on almost-miniseries build-up." Del Toro went on to praise the trailer for its faithful recreation of Alan Moore's graphic novel. "I think Zack Snyder is a brilliant visual creator and everything in the trailer seems right - if not completely dead-on. To be absolutely honest, I even got a little bit of a geekgasm." |
| "Batman Returns" Batmobile is on Sale | Aug 19, 2008 | Petes1234567 | Other | Kruse International is holding an auction for fans to bid on rare collectibles, including an authentic "Batman Returns" Batmobile, which is #3 of a total of 5 cars used during the production. Check out the picture below. Other less valuable non-movie promotional Batmobiles have sold for as much as $550,000, so an actual Batmobile is expected to bring in a record price. The Warner Bros & DC Comics sales approval agreement clearly authenticates that this is the number 3 Movie Batmobile.
